The CCLR welcomes John Aglialoro, Camden County native and graduate of Collingswood
High School and Temple University, as he discusses Atlas Shrugged (Parts I and II and the upcoming Part III). Though he’s perhaps best known as the chairman and owner (along with his wife Joan Carter) of a high-end fitness company Cybex (CYBI), John Aglialoro is making a name for himself in the film industry with his production of the film adaptation of the classic Ayn Rand book, Atlas Shrugged. The series of movies bring to life the novel first published in 1957 by Russian-American novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter, Ayn Rand. The story explores a dystopian United States where many of society’s most productive citizens refuse to be exploited by increasing taxation and government regulations and disappear, shutting down their vital industries. The disappearances evoke the imagery of what would happen if the mythological Atlas refused to continue to hold up the sky. They are led by John Galt who describes the disappearances as “stopping the motor of the world” by withdrawing the people that drive society’s productivity. In their efforts, these characters hope to demonstrate that the destruction of the profit motive leads to the collapse of society. Mr. Aglialoro will discuss Parts I and II as he sets the stage for the release of Part III in July 2014. A question and answer period will follow his talk addressing the modern resurgence of Ayn Rand’s novel, which made Amazon.com’s bestseller list in 2009 with sales exceeding 450,000 copies sold.
