Thank you for contacting me to express your frustrations regarding the recent admission by the
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that it singled out conservative groups for additional scrutiny. I
sincerely appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this important issue.
As you may know, in May 2013, it was reported that Lois Lerner, the IRS Director for tax-exempt
groups, admitted that the IRS targeted applications of organizations with “tea party” or “patriot” in
their names. Following these reports, I participated in a House Oversight and Government Reform
Committee hearing to address these revelations.
During this hearing, four senior level Treasury Department and IRS officials, including Ms. Lerner,
appeared before the Committee. From the testimony provided by three of the four witnesses it is
apparent that, not only were these reports of discrimination true but also that several senior level
officials were aware of this discriminatory targeting and took no action to stop these practices.
Like most Americans, I am horrified by this egregious abuse of authority committed by the IRS.
These actions are a clear violation of the IRS’s stated mission to ‘enforce the law with integrity and
fairness to all.’ Furthermore, I find it even more appalling that the IRS, the same agency responsible
for targeting Americans based on their political beliefs, will be in charge of implementing the
President’s health care law.
The revelations unveiled so far about the IRS’s actions are reprehensible. As a member of the
Oversight and Government Reform Committee, rest assured that I will continue to do everything
in my power to uncover the whole truth, hold those responsible for the decisions they made and
work to ensure that no group, conservative or otherwise, is unduly or unlawfully targeted again.
It is an honor and a privilege representing you and all of Tennessee’s Fourth Congressional District.
Please let me know if you have additional comments or question on this or any other matter.
